The era where Manchester United's name alone was enough to secure victories seems to be a distant memory. Nowadays, they are more likely to be seen as a target for three points rather than an insurmountable foe. The appointment of Ruben Amorim could change this narrative.
Following the departure of Erik ten Hag, Manchester United are in advanced talks to bring the 39-year-old Portuguese manager on board, with Ruud van Nistelrooy temporarily taking the reins.
Amorim's coaching履历 has been exclusively within Portugal, with stints at Casa Pia, Braga, and Sporting. This means his encounters with English teams have been few and far between, mostly limited to European competitions.
During his tenure at Sporting, Amorim has clinched two domestic championships and has faced off against Arsenal, Tottenham, and Manchester City. Despite the disparity in resources, he has managed to impress, even earning high praise from Pep Guardiola.
"The experience of playing against Ruben’s Sporting Lisbon team was intense," Guardiola remarked. "I've spoken with Matheus Nunes, who speaks very highly of Amorim. This season, Sporting is unbeaten, matching our points in both the Portuguese League and the Champions League."

Early in his career, Amorim faced Manchester City in the Champions League, a formidable task that resulted in a heavy defeat at home. However, the second leg ended in a goalless draw.
In the 2022/23 season, Amorim's Sporting faced both Arsenal and Tottenham. A late win over Spurs at the José Alvalade Stadium was followed by a hard-fought draw against Tottenham and Arsenal.
Against Arsenal, after going behind, Sporting managed to lead 2-1, only for an own-goal to level the score. The match went to penalties, with Sporting advancing after a 6-4 win in the shootout.
